The Z170-A board is some kind of starting point in a new lineup that does not have a gaming focus or advanced features for overclockers.

The engineers provided a small number of third-party controllers to extend the functionality expected from the Intel Z170 system logic. This includes one PCI slot and support for USB 3.1 Gen2 via two A and C ports on the rear panel.

The coloring of the elements has shifted to a completely neutral monochrome color scheme. The radiators are of military steel color, the rest is made with white, gray and black colors. The size of the board corresponds to the ATX format, it has a full nine mounting points.

The back side is almost devoid of elements. There are three transistors in the voltage regulator area and three white LEDs near the sound codec’s pinout. The chipset cooler is quite big, it is fixed with two screws, and the heatsinks in the VRM area use plastic nails with a spring.

The set of HDD sockets hasn’t changed compared to the standard products, where Intel Z97 was used as the base. True, now there are four PCI-E lines of the third revision to the M.2 socket. There is a sticker that says to use one of the sockets for the system storage. It is connected with impossibility to reconfigure its use of certain resources, which will relieve novice users from unnecessary problems.

There are several control elements on the board. In particular, these are the EZ XMP (two positions) and TPU (three positions) state switches. The first will activate XMP at the RAM set, in which case the green light will be on. Using TPU will automatically overclock the system. The LEDs are not used for this, and also now there is no EPU state switch, which was previously found in combination with TPU.

Two full-size PCI-E cards can evenly distribute sixteen lines from the CPU. Four ASM1480 switches help with this. One more full-sized slot is dedicated to PCH resources, and the maximum configuration will have only four lines. I’d like to mention as many as three fan connection pads above the top PCI-E x1.

The heatsinks, though small, have a large number of slots. The traditional thermal pads with thickness of about 1,5 millimeters act as a heat conductor.
