The Ultimate Force (TUF) series devices from ASUS are quite popular. Improved component base, as well as extended warranty period up to 5 years, often become a weighty argument for those who first of all value high quality and choose a platform if not “forever”, then for a fairly long period of time. The latest addition to our military lineup is the ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0.
ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 is based on AMD 990FX chipset with dual chip layout including north and south bridge chips. This configuration can no longer be called classic. Taking into consideration the fact that other actual platforms for desktop systems already use single chip chipsets, and their functions are reduced to serving peripheral devices, the solution with twice the number of chips is more likely to refer to the style of retro. The board layout is standard for devices with logic sets that have a dual chip layout. Traditionally north bridge chip is located in the middle of the PCB, while SB950 south bridge is between expansion slots and SATA ports.
The board allows to use any processors designed for Socket AM3 and AM3+, including Vishera chips with updated Piledriver architecture that were presented quite recently.
ASUS SABERTOOTH 990FX R2.0 features ten phase design (8+2). The VRM components are lined up in a row parallel to the interface panel, with some of the elements placed on the back side of the PCB, and are additionally cooled by an anodized aluminum plate. The MOSFETs on the front side are covered by a rather massive radiator with a zigzag bend profile.

The north bridge chip also has a cooler of similar design. To improve heat distribution, the radiators are combined with a heat pipe. In addition, the elements of the OS design have a special ceramic coating CeraM!X with microscopic roughness, which allows to increase the heat dissipation area of the radiators, thereby improving the cooling efficiency of the heated elements. The manufacturer mentions the use of aerospace technology and a 50% increase in dissipation area. It is not easy to determine the share of marketing in these figures, but any improvement in cooling can already be considered as an advantage of the device.
The second revision of SABERTOOTH 990FX uses separate Digi+ digital controllers to control CPU and RAM power parameters. The board uses components with improved characteristics that have passed a number of specialized tests. In particular these are Alloy Choke as well as quality solid state capacitors and MOSFETs. The special circuit layout of the key elements of the platform helped to reduce the unavoidable power losses.
