The ASUS PG279Q monitor is based on an AHVA matrix (refers to IPS-type) manufactured by AU Optronics, model M270Q008 V0. This is an 8-bit (without FRC) 27-inch solution with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels (WQHD standard), W-LED backlighting without using WFI-modulation and a standard 16:9 aspect ratio. At the moment this matrix is used exclusively in the hero of the review, but we are likely to meet it in some time in the yet-to-be-released Acer XB271HU.
The declared maximum brightness of ASUS PG279Q is 350 cd/m2, static contrast ratio is 1000:1, viewing angles are 178 degrees in both planes, and the response time measured by GtG is 4 ms.
The monitor is equipped with the long-known NVIDIA G-Sync and ULMB technology. The working range of the first – from 30 to 165 Hz. Ultra Low Motion Blur can be activated only if the monitor operates at 85, 100 or 120 Hz. The two technologies do not work together due to completely different principles of operation.
The native vertical scanning frequency of the installed matrix is 144 Hz. However, in order to achieve this frequency (not to mention 165 Hz in overclocked mode), a video card of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 level or higher must be installed in the user’s system. Otherwise, there is a limit of 120 Hz, which, however, will be more than enough for the vast majority of users.

The recommended minimum is GTX 650 type graphics. ASUS PG279Q can unleash its full potential only when using the Display Port 1.2a installed. With HDMI connection and the maximum available working resolution the user will be limited to 60 Hz.
The new AUO matrix allowed ASUS engineers and designers to use what we consider to be their best monitor design practices. The PG279Q is one of the company’s few monitors with a pseudo-transparent case design. This is the case when the inner frame, usually enclosed by a general protective surface, is covered by thin black metal plates. It looks impressive and expensive, but at the same time it’s clear from the very beginning that 100% Framelessness is out of the question – there’s no cheating.
There are two USB 3.0 ports and one 3.5mm audio output for working with peripherals. There is a VESA mount and a built-in speaker system with two 2W speakers each. The ergonomics of the stand is the maximum possible for solutions of this kind.
