Already by the name Asus ROG Strix Z490-E Gaming it is clear that this board is for gamers. It’s more of a midrange board than a top-of-the-line motherboard. It is designed for the new processors with LGA1200 socket. The chipset is a top one, the board is positioned for the fastest Intel processors under LGA 1200, so the cost is relatively high. The functionality of ROG Strix Z490-E includes 17 USB ports of different kinds, three PCIe x16 slots (the first two of them get 16 PCIe lines from the processor with the ability to create Nvidia SLI or AMD CrossFire, PCIe x16 is the third slot, working in x4 mode for expansion cards or for AMD CrossFire of three video cards), three PCIe x1, two M.2 slots, six SATA ports. CPU power system uses 16 phases (2×7+2×1) and is able to run any compatible processor under serious overclocking. The board has powerful radiators on power elements of power converter, reinforced by complete fan, 8 slots for fans and pumps, also all drives in M.2 slots have radiators. To complete the picture, there is a high-speed wired 2.5 GbE network controller, as well as a wireless controller that runs 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0.

The board has some of ROG’s proprietary overclocking capabilities. On top of that there is a very nice backlighting, including a wide range of options for installing additional RGB devices.

On the whole the board turned out to be interesting. It is clear that it is not cheap, but it is positioned for gamers, eager to play on very powerful platforms. Don’t forget that Intel and AMD autorolling technologies carefully “probe” power systems and set maximum possible frequencies only for very high level solutions, so even for 5.0 GHz from Core i9-10900 you have to buy a relatively serious board. And of course, we should take into account the fact that the boards with LGA1200 must survive another generation of Intel processors.
