Here comes the Asus Prime X299 Edition 30, a new product in the Prime series. This series is not for avid gamers (but sometimes you can indulge), and they don’t have workstations, but just PCs for office/home use. For such in the range of Asus there is a series Prime. Boards in this series are not particularly tricky, “chips” for overclockers, but at the same time not spartan and simple. The main emphasis on stability and durability: put it and forget it until the need to upgrade. However, it should be specially noted that this model which has been released to honor Asustek’s 30th anniversary stands out with some trimmings all the same, and it can be referred to the Prime series only because it follows the serial style in design.
The Intel Core i9-7000X/9000X/10000X processors (compatible with LGA2066 socket and supported by X299) have no USB ports, 28 (Core 7800X) or 44 (Core 7900X/9900X) or 48 (Core 10000X) I/O lines (including PCI-E 3.0), while communication with X299 goes via special Digital Media Interface 3.0 (DMI 3.0) channel and no PCI-E lines are used for that. All of the processor’s PCI-E lines go exclusively to PCI-E expansion slots. Therefore, in systems of this kind you can easily find two PCI-Ex16 slots receiving 16 lines (which again, can only be found in AMD Ryzen Threadripper level systems) and one or two more PCI-Ex16 slots receiving 8 lines each. Intel processors have no USB/SATA ports support.
In its turn, X299 chipset supports a total of 30 I/O lines, which can be configured as USB, SATA, PCI-E ports. There should be a maximum of 14 USB ports, of which up to 10 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports (Gen2 is not supported), and/or up to 14 USB 2.0 ports. Up to 8 SATA ports and up to 24 PCI-E 3.0 ports are also supported.
So in total we get the maximum out of X299+Core X tandem:
- 28/44/48 PCI-E 3.0 lanes for graphics cards or other peripherals with PCI-E interface (from CPU);
- 14 USB ports in total with up to 10 USB 3.2 Gen1 ports and 14 USB 2.0 ports (from chipset);
- 8 SATA 6Gb/s ports (from chipset);
- 24 PCI-E 3.0 ports (from chipset).
It is clear that if there are only 30 ports then all of the ports mentioned above must fit within that limit. So, most likely there will be a shortage of PCI-E lines, and freely configurable into any additional ports/slots PCI-E lines are not here, and this is another dramatic difference between Intel and AMD platforms.
