As a rule, ASUS motherboards marked with the letter PRO are intermediate solutions between the middle class and older products, and so it happened in the line of boards based on the Intel Z77 Express motherboard chipset. On the one hand there is the cheaper P8Z77-V, on the other there is the more expensive P8Z77-V Deluxe, and the P8Z77-V PRO is somewhere in the middle, so an “above average” product will be something to compare it to.

Design and board features

The ASUS P8Z77-V PRO is made in an ATX form factor size (305x244mm). The fact that it is not a top model in the line can be seen by the naked eye: there are bare stands with unsoldered controllers, radiators of cooling system are not connected by heat pipe, there are no buttons to power/reboot the system. Externally the board looks more similar to P8Z77-V than to P8Z77-V Deluxe, especially you can tell it by the configuration of its expansion slots. Comparing to the P8Z77-V you will find more USB 3.0 ports and an enhanced CPU power converter.

When you see the front side of the board, you can notice that screw mounting of VRM heatsinks is used and when you see the picture of the back side it becomes clear why the screws were visible exactly there: heatsinks are mounted through the clamping plate and the screws are screwed exactly there creating some kind of a “sandwich”. Screw mounting is also used for the chipset heatsink, but there it is already more familiar. Thanks to the last picture we can find out the manufacturer of the processor connector – it is Foxconn.

Four slots are soldered for DDR3 memory, which are equipped with snaps only from the top. Since the PCI-E X16 graphics slot is at the height of the second expansion slot (the top/first is PCI-E X1), using latches on one side only looks unreasonable. If the slots had latches on both sides, access to the RAM slots would be maintained even with a video card installed in the system, but the memory modules would be locked more tightly, and in general, double-sided latches are more convenient.

The manufacturer announced the modes of DDR3 1066 / 1333 / 1600 / 1866 (overclocking) / 2133 (overclocking) / 2200 (overclocking) / 2400 (overclocking) MHz. The list of these modes is not complete (as far as Ivy Bridge processors are concerned), but in fact all memory frequency multipliers available to the processor are provided in the settings. The maximum size of 32 GB indicates that the board supports 8 GB DDR3 modules.

To activate Dual Channel mode it is necessary to install slots of the same color, that is either 1/3 or 2/4. To ensure the highest module compatibility and overclocking stability, the manufacturer recommends to use blue slots in the first place, that is 2/4.
